The Solid Waste Management District of St. Joseph County is currently seeking applicants to work in the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facility.
The position title is HHW Worker II, starting pay is $25,750, salary, bi-weekly, with full benefits. The position schedule will start as Tuesday through Saturday, 8am-4pm.
Duties of the HHW Worker II position include consistent interaction with the public, handling of household chemicals, paints, stains, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, etc., assisting the public as needed to remove items from vehicles, sorting materials appropriately for final disposal. Successful applicant will be trained to operate any equipment (including skid loader and /or forklift).
This position will be interacting with the public on a consistent and daily basis, and will need to be able to provide accurate information on the District's programs, types of materials accepted at the facility, and available alternatives in the community for materials we do not accept.
The position will be responsible to accurately sort and process items brought to the facility and place them in the appropriate packaging for final disposal, i.e.; gaylords, 55 gallon drums, boxes, etc., will handle containers/cans of paint, stains, motor oil, antifreeze, and an array of common household chemicals. These can include bleach, caustics, acids, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents, etc. Further, mercury containing items, such as fluorescent bulbs, thermometers, and thermostats are also handled.
This position will also operate any equipment used in the daily duties of the program. This may include various tools, but specifically the operation of a skid loader and/or forklift. Training will be provided by the District prior to an employee using any equipment.
Must be able to follow all safety requirements and guidelines in recognizing and handling materials collected, the operation of equipment, and the care and safety of the physical grounds and the public.
The ability to perform physical work is required, including, but not limited to" lifting 50 lbs., consistently standing and/or moving throughout the building in order to perform duties, ability to push/pull carts of materials, set-up gaylord boxes, move drums, and operate tools. This position will mainly perform duties within a warehouse setting, but at times will be required to be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
