St. Joseph County Jail

Major Julie Lawson is the warden of the St. Joseph County Jail, which is located at 401 W. Sample St. South Bend, IN 46601. Anyone arrested in St. Joseph County by the nine police departments within the county are brought to our facility where they are either able to bond out or await charges and prosecution. Occasionally, an inmate will be sentenced to complete their time at the St. Joseph County Jail instead of going to the Indiana Department of Corrections. This is up to the judge’s discretion and is also determined by available beds.

The 102 Corrections Officers who work at the jail strive to run a facility in which the inmates, visitors and staff are safe and treated fairly.

Our officers are also trained and instructed to act professionally towards all inmates, visitors and members of the community. All Corrections Officers maintain a rigorous training schedule, according to the Indiana state standards.

The Jail contains a recently updated state-of-the-art security system that consists of pneumatically controlled security doors and locks, computerized touch screen security with an internal communications system, and over 130 monitoring cameras recorded 24/7. It also has a video arraignment system that is used by many of the judges and magistrates in the county.
